John Marshall Harlan II #89 (1899-1971) Justice Harlan’s grandfather sat on the supreme court from (1877-1911). Justice Harlan II was a nomination made by President Eisenhower and he autographs a letter on supreme court stationary dated October 24, 1955, addressed to Mr. Phillip Maroney.
Arthur Goldberg #94 (1908-1990) autographs his own likeness. Justice Goldberg was nominated to the court by President Kennedy.
Upon Kennedy’s assassination President Johnson, pictured below with Goldberg shaking hands convinced Goldberg his services were needed in the United Nations and after a scant three years on the bench he resigned from the court. (Goldberg lasted at the united nations also a scant 3 years and as it turns out he surrendered a life position for a term hardly enough to reach retirement age.
Justice Harlan II during his tenure was considered a strong and decisive justice by many observers.
