Chief William Howard Taft #69 ( 10th Chief Justice, 27th President of the United States). TAFT IS THE 10TH CHIEF JUSTICE OF THE SUPREME COURT. Chief Taft autographs a letter on letterhead of the war department dated and signed by the future President and Chief Justice on December 28, 1906. Included on the 26 x 34’ board are 7 photographs or prints. In the first photograph the chief is depicted in a fancy styled suit. The second shows him in a bowler hat and fur jacket. A 3rd shows him in his judicial robes. A 4th shows him in a top hat walking with his wife, Helen. In another he stand with Helen behind some children. The Supreme Court room at Independence Hall, in Philadelphia is also displayed during a visit to the white house. There is speculation Taft selected upon the death of Chief Fuller Edward Douglas white as Chief because he wanted to be the Chief Justice and hated the Presidency. That did happen. White died in 1921 and Taft was nominated chief by President Harding in the same year.
