Justice Hugo Black# 76 (1886-1971)
Justice Hugo Black# 76 (1886-1971). Justice Black autographs a first day cover dated August 25, 1948. A stamp of the Chief Justice is affixed to the cover as well as a photograph of black and his wife Josephine as well as a small photo of the United States Supreme Court building. There is another picture of the Justice with his wife Josephine and two other pictures of a very young supreme court Justice who was nominated by Franklin Delano Roosevelt. He really looked in good health for when he was nominated to the court, he was 51 years old. He was a member of the Klan but if you didn’t belong you would never get elected as Black was from Alabama. Black gives us a chambers peek in the last photograph.
Justice Black was a strict constructionist and literally interpreted the Constitution. Black observed: “it is true the bill of rights were designed to meet ancient evils. But they are the same kind of ancient evils that have emerged from century to century whenever excessive power is sought by the few at the expense of the many.”
