Justice Charles Evans Hughes #62 & Justice Owen Roberts #74
This board presents two men both of whom are Associate Justices. It also includes two letters one signed by Associate Justice Charles Evans Hughes #62 in November, 1906 four years before he us nominated to the Supreme Court by President Taft as an Associate Justice.
The other letter is written by Justice Owen Roberts #74 on stationary of Montgomery , McCracken, Walker, and Rhoads a Law Firm in Philadelphia on April 1, 1946, a year after he resigned from the United States Supreme Court.
Some may say Roberts was a fool to resign from the court but he did so when he was 70 and he passed at 80. His timing seems perfect.
Some may say Hughes was a fool to resign from the Court, especially since he didn’t win his presidential bid but President Taft named him Chief Justice in 1930 so many may say he improved his position. During a White House visit one must only count the canes of assistance on this board to realize this job on the Supreme Court is difficult enough to stay until the bitter end like 51 of 116 other Justices have done.
Board #366,
Offered for: $2900.
