Salmon P. Chase #39 (1808-1873) Samuel F. Miller #36 (1816-1890)
6th Chief Justice Chase served in that capacity from 1864-1873. Lincoln nominated his as Chief Justice. One of his first acts as Chief was to admit Attorney John Rock as the first black American to be able to argue cases before the Supreme Court. Chase writes a letter dated April 20, 1864 eight months before being named Chief Justice as head of the Treasury Department in his own hand. Included are two prints of him. Chase had a running battle with Lincoln where Lincoln accepted his 4th resignation from the Treasury Department
Dr. Samuel F. Miller #36 (1816-1890) Miller practiced medicine for 10 years before becoming a lawyer. Chief Rehnquist identified miller as the “dominant figure” on the court during that time in our country. he wrote more majority decisions than field or Marshall. Still, he was never chief. Justice miller in 1878 autographs his name and notes he is an associate justice of the united states supreme court. the board includes a likeness of him.
