Potter Stewart #92 (1915-1985)
Potter married Mary Ann Berties and had three children with her. He attended Yale, performed in the United States Naval Reserve, and was nominated to the United States Supreme Court by Dwight D. Eisenhower and performed in that capacity for 22 + years. He made great strides in authoring decisions that reference criminal justice and writing landmark decisions in criminal justice. He is famous for uttering the observation that Obscenity is hard to define but I know it when I see it. Justice Douglas warned that if the court couldn’t easily define obscenity those that follow would never be able to apply it. He was right Justice Stewart later retracted his observation.
Stewart autographs this board in two (2) places once on a 4 x 5 card dating it June 1982 after his retirement from the Court and once on newsprint identifying him as the newest Justice on the Supreme Court in October 1958.
