8th Chief Justice Salmon P. Chase #39 is depicted in the center on the front page of harper’s weekly dated December 24, 1864. On April 27, 1867, he is depicted sitting as chief justice flanked by other members of the court (the artist depicted but 5 Justices, but the court of 1867 had nine.)

That court had as its members as follows James Moore Wayne, John Catron, Samuel Nelson, Robert Cooper Grier, Nathan Clifford, Noah Haynes Swayne, Samuel Freeman Miller, David Davis and the former California Chief Justice Steven Johnson Field. The Chase autograph apparently comes from a letter he signed when he was serving as Secretary of the Treasury from 1861-1864. By deduction, the front page of Harper’s weekly must be chase’s first appearance on that periodical as Salmon was confirmed as Chief on December 15, 1864. Also included herein is a superior steel engraving and a smaller copy of the same subject.
