Arthur Goldberg #94 (1908-1990) and Abe Fortas #95 (1819-1982)
Arthur Goldberg #94 (1908-1990) and Abe Fortas #95 (1819-1982) these are two Justices who in consecutive fashion made the mistakes of a lifetime concurrent to each other. Their stay on the court was brief by their own doing. Justice Goldberg in less than three years and as a favor to President Johnson surrendered his seat on the court to accept the position as the U.S. Representative to the United Nations. That position lasted 3 years.
Justice Fortas was a fixture of the court long before President Johnson nominated to that position. But by being considered for Chief Justice it was discovered Fortas had a lifetime stipend from the family Wolfson and Fortas in less than four years was resigned his post as Justice Goldberg had before him. They were the firefly’s of the Supreme Court. Goldberg autographs his photograph while Fortas autographs a letter from his firm on June 4, 1952, 13 years before he is nominated to the Supreme Court.
