Levi Woodbury #30 (1789-1851) & Nathan Clifford #34 (1803-1881)

Board #160 James f. Byrnes #81 (1882-1972)

Levi Woodbury (1789-1851) autographs a letter sent by him on July 6, 1836, as Secretary of the Treasury nearly 160 years ago. Woodbury found himself on a track where many secretaries of the treasury found themselves nominated to the Supreme Court as Woodbury found himself nine years after he signed this missive. Woodbury didn’t have a law degree.

Nathan Clifford (1803-1881) was nominated to the court in January 1858 and he was nominated by President James Buchanan. Clifford was one of few people to claim he worked in all three branches of government. Clifford was barely approved by the senate because of his expected prejudice’s but he was approved by a vote of 26 to 23. Justice Clifford autographs a letter sent by him dated by him during the worst of the civil war years.

The likenesses of both Justices are found attached to the board. Clifford served the court for 23 ½ years and died in office while Woodbury served nearly 6 years. He also died in office.

Board: 160.
