Stevens was considered by many to have been one of the most intelligent, affable respectful and intelligent Justices ever to sit upon the court. (this writer has seen many more with that kind of spirit.) his demeanor contributed widely to his popularity.

Stevens has contributed three photographs of himself. They all are in his robes and who would have recognized him without a bow tie.

He was an avid baseball fan and it is said when Babe Ruth pointed to the center field wall and put the next pitch right on the spot indicated John Paul Stevens witnessed that gesture. He sits on the left side of the chief in the court photo. There are 2 women present and in robes.
