On January 7,1972, Richard Nixon nominated to the Supreme Court two Justices William Rehnquist #100 (1924-2005) and Lewis F. Powell, Jr. #99 (1907- 1998). Justice Powell served as associate Justice of the Supreme Court from 1972 through 1987. Justice Rehnquist served as Associate Justice until September 1986 where Richard Nixon nominated him and he became the 16th Chief Justice of the court. Rehnquist autographs a first day cover postmarked July 4, 1976 honoring President Thomas Jefferson. Justice Powell, Jr. autographs a letter on Supreme Court letterhead where both the letter and envelope display a postmark of April 5, 1973, there are photographs of both new Justices as well as Chief Burger. There is a snowy picture of the United States Supreme Court building taken at night and it displays a wonderful contrast in style and beauty. It should be noted chief Rehnquist served perhaps the most memorable term in all the 1990’s.
