Justice William Brennan, Jr. #90 (1906-1997)

Board 036 - William Brennan, Jr.

Justice Brennan autographs a 1950 first day cover. Brennan also has two photographs and a color photograph as well as a photograph celebrating his life in the law. Brennan was nominated by Dwight D. Eisenhower, and he was known for his outspoken progressive views. Strikingly, he was against the death penalty suggesting that death never persuaded anyone not to murder someone else. He thought the religious doctrine of an eye for an eye was insufficient for one man to take a life or for a government to. Many on the court adopted his views. He became the 6th longest sitting Justice. During the confirmation vote the only Senator to vote against him was Senator Joseph McCarthy the communist hunter. Brennan had a close relationship with Chief Warren who asked Brennan to write many majority decisions. He was dubbed “deputy chief”.
