Rufus W. Peckham #56 (1838-1909)

Board 054 - Rufus W. Peckham #56 (1838-1909), Grover Cleveland

Rufus W. Peckham #56 (1838-1909) autographs a card noting he is a member of the United States Supreme Court. This Justice is the last Justice nominated by a sitting Democrat to be approved by a Republican controlled Senate.

Really? So much for the senate representing the interests of “we the people…” (perhaps what Chief Justice Hughes said about the real danger to America is more accurate than fanciful.) there is another photograph of Peckham with a dark background and with a light background there is a picture of the court including the justices serving with Justice Peckham, there is also a photograph of the nominating president Grover Cleveland.

Justice Peckham remained on the court until his death in 1909. Justice White, also a Cleveland nominee was elevated to the Chief Justice position in 1910 by then President Taft causing wide speculation that Taft coveted the Chief Justice position so intentionally selected an ageing Justice White for the position as chief.

Board number is 56.

Offered for: $2950.
