Justice John McLean #21 (1785-1861) wrote a letter to the postal department on 18 February 1825 commencing “SIR”. (197 years ago.)
When he wrote this, he was the Postmaster General of the United States. Four years later he was nominated to the supreme court by Andrew Jackson, President. There is a photograph of John McLean in his judicial robes and a picture of John McLean of a close-up view, the board includes a color print of President Andrew Jackson. There is a Seal of the United States Supreme Court on a first day cover postmarked January 12, 1983, containing original art by Pugh limited and numbered #137 of 147. Justice McLean wrote one of two strong dissents in the case of Dred Scott. After a very long wait that decision was overturned in 1954 by our Supreme Court in Brown v Board of Education.
