Justice Charles Evans Hughes #62 (1862-1948), Willis Van Devanter #63

Board 098 - Justice Charles Evans Hughes #62, Willis van Devanter #63

Charles Evans Hughes #62 (1862-1948). Justice Hughes was nominated to the Supreme Court by President Taft. He served from 1910- 1916 and resigned from the court to run for President. As an Associate Justice Hughes autographed an undated card.

Willis Van Devanter #63 was also nominated by President Taft . He served from December 1910 through 1937. Van Devanter autographs card as an associate justice and dates it March 23, 1929. (It should be noted that Charles Evans Hughes lost his bid or the Presidency and was nominated as the 11th chief Justice by Herbert hoover in 1930.) Van Devanter along with Pierce Butler, James McReynolds and George Sutherland were known as a group of Justices to comprise “the four horsemen” in the days that the fragmented court were so divided the came and went together in the same car and hardly spoke to one another. The “new deal” offered by F.D.R. was in the balance and F.D.R. threatened to expand the members on the court to assist those ageing. 1 changed vote saved the composition of the court.

BOARD is Numbered #098.
