Justice Mahlon Pitney #65 (1858-1924) Justice Pitney was nominated to the court by President Taft in 1912. His appointment was contested but he was accepted by the senate by a 50-26 vote. Pitney graduated Princeton in 1789 one of his classmates was future President Woodrow Wilson. He read law in his fathers practice and admitted in New Jersey in 1882. Eventually he was appointed to the New Jersey Supreme Court for a 7-year term in 1901 where he remained until his nomination to the High Court.

Justice James Clark McReynolds #66 (1862-1946) was nominated to the Court by President Wilson and he was installed as Justice in 1914 and remained until 1941. Before his appointment this man from Kentucky studied law at Virginia and was Secretary to Justice Howell Jackson for 2 years. His demeanor to other justices was hostile. He was unmarried and very particular with his staff. He made many enemies with his demeanor, but Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr. had kind words.
