W. Abraham Fortas was an Associate Justice nominated by Lynden B. Johnson. This board includes a photograph of President Johnson and Abe Fortas and no comment need be made as to their friendship. Before he became a Justice Fortas was appointed to represent the interest of the defendant in Gideon v Wainwright a case that asked should an attorney be provided to a defendant and if that answer is yes what kind of an attorney does the Constitution require?

After the argument Justice Hugo Black was given the chore of writing the Majority Decision.

The answer was β€œyes” an indigent defendant needs an attorney and one that is competent. The letter from a Fortas secretary has him signing a photo sent to him for an autograph request. The board includes that autograph and another. There are 5 photographs: 1. A picture of Fortas in his robes; 2.3, and 4. Three small photos of the justice one signed as noted above.

And 5. A picture of president Johnson with Abe Fortas.
