Margaret Thatcher, Sandra Day O’Connor
MARGARET THATCHER/ ENGLAND PRIME MINISTER
SANDRA DAY O’CONNOR/ U.S. SUPREME COURT
BOTH WOMAN MEET AS FIRST FEMALES TO SERVE IN THESE POSITIONS IN EITHER COUNTRY
there are firsts for everything. There are two firsts that occurred close in time and worthwhile recording for the sake of history.
In 1979 England successfully installed its first female prime minister and that was not considered any time before 1979. Records tell us there have now been 3 female prime ministers who served a total of 14 years 272 days. The great majority of that time found Margaret thatcher at the helm. She served longer in the 20th century than ANY MALE COUNTERPART.
THE board produces the autograph of Margaret thatcher found on a first day cover dated
May 13, 1965 and depicting the likeness and stamp of sir Winston Churchill. The board includes a print of the great seal of England and a caricature of the prime minister Margaret thatcher.
The prime minister is shown shaking hands with another first but not in England, in America. Margaret thatcher is shaking hands with justice Sandra day O’Connor the first female justice to be nominated to the united states supreme court. Sandra day set her record on
September 25, 1981. Justice O’Connor remained on the court a span of 24 years slightly longer than Margaret remained as prime minister. Sandra day O’Connor autographed a first day cover depicting the likeness of Oliver Wendell Holmes, jr. which is postmarked June 14, 1978. Included is a seal of the united states supreme court as well as a caricature of Sandra day.
During her tenure thatcher implemented a free market economy, decreased militant trade working days, lowered inflation, and allowed tenants to buy homes at discounted prices.
During her tenure as associate justice O’Connor became known as a conservative who researched her cases meticulously, became a swing vote on many cases and wrote many more decisions than many of the male justices
This unnumbered board celebrates the freedom woman have carved out of oppression.
