Abe Fortas #95 (1910-1982)
A defense attorney Fortas, took appeals to the United States Supreme Court and received appointments from them. One of the most notable was Gideon v Wainwright where in a criminal prosecution the state was constitutionally required to provide a defendant with a competent attorney to represent him. The Justice Hugo Black writing agreed.
Eventually Fortas was nominated to the Supreme Court. After nearly 4 years Fortas was being considered for the Chief Justice position but a contract with the family Wolfson brought not elevation but resignation. Fortas autographs an undated 4 x 5 card. He is shown in 5 photographs engaged in differing things and he is pictured with his fellow court members as the courts newest Justice in October 1965.
