James F. Byrnes #81 (1882-1972)

Board #159 James F. Byrnes #81 (1882-1972)

James F. Byrnes #81 (1882-1972) Byrnes was variously a member of the House of Representatives, a U.S. Senator, a Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court, Director of the Office of Economic stabilization, Director of War Mobilization, Secretary of State and Governor of the State of South Carolina. He was everything. For a Supreme Court justice Byrnes tenure with the court is the shortest span of any Justice at any time for any reason. A span in time of barely over a year. One would think the furniture in his chambers hardly had time to be broken in before this butterfly Justice was off to yet another appointment. In that time, however, we were able to capture a letter originating in the U.S. Senate where he supported Roosevelts court packing suggestion. The letter? It talks of how he can help a person he feels indebted too. The photos show the justice holding on to a bible and his appearance as the second youngest sitting Justice (second row top left). The picture of the Supreme Court building is stupendous.
