Board #165 - Stanley Foreman Reed #77 (1884-1980) & Justice Hugo Black #76 (1886-1971)

Justice Stanley Foreman Reed #77 was born in Kentucky and autographs an undated chambers card. Reed attended law school but didn’t graduate. He and his wife, Winifred were active in the sons and daughters of the American Revolution. Since his appointment to the court, he is the last Justice to be appointed to the court without a law degree. Reed had planned to dissent on Brown v Board of Education but Chief Warren helped him decide otherwise.

Justice Hugo Black #76 (1886-1971) was Roosevelt’s first nomination to the court. black was a member of the KKK but without joining he would never have been elected to congress in Alabama. Black strictly interpreted the constitution.

Reed has 3 pictures on the board while Black has 2. By the time Vinson became chief both men sat in the front row. The decision of Korematsu v U. S. that interred many American/Japanese was a decision he wished he never authored.
