Justice Potter Stewart #92 (1915-1985)

Board #168 - Justice potter Stewart #92 (1915-1985)

Justice Potter Stewart #92 (1915-1985) was nominated to the court in 1962 by President Eisenhower. It is important to note the Supreme Court in Furman v Georgia invalidated the death penalty laws in all the states and four years later in Gregg v Georgia they adopted revised capital punishment legislation. Although not mentioned then when they invalidated the death penalty the court automatically converted a death sentence like Charles Manson’s and “the zebra murderers” to life without possibility of parole.

Stewart’s autograph is affixed to his 1969 decision in the 1969 decision of Mulloy v United States , a conscientious objector case. (Viet Nam spanned a time from 1955- 1975). There are four photographs of the Justice, one in his court robes. There is also a court photograph of 1967 which fins Justice Stewart sandwiched between Justices Fortas and White in the second row. The Seal of the United States in an art drawing by Pugh numbered 11/25 postmarked January 11, 1983 is displayed.
